HEALTH AND COMMUNITY SERVICES
Manual handling in hospitals and aged care facilities are the major cause of injuries.
Design 4 Health is a coordinated campaign by safety authorities in all Australian states and territories to target manual handling risks in the health and community services industry. In particular, the campaign recognises the need to design equipment and work environments to address manual handling risks. Every employer has a legal duty to ensure that any worker required to can do so safely and without risk to their health.
This coordinated campaign throughout Australia and New Zealand emphasises the message that every injury is preventable. The Design 4 Health campaign involved workplace health and safety inspectors visiting and conducting audits of approximately 650 hospitals and aged care facilities nationally from May to September in 2004. A full report has been released and can be viewed here.
